| Bio: | As I write, my white cat is sleeping on the kitchen chair beside me. All I have to do to wake him up is to leave this chair and go somewhere else in the apartment. He will then follow me there and go to sleep right next to me again. A couple of you are new to this journal, so I will copy out relevant facts from the old profile here for you to see and decide if you wish to make my further acquaintance. Here's hoping that all of you who are on my Friends List below will friend me back and become mutual friends. That was the status of many of you on my old LJ, and I would like it to continue. I am thinking today about freedom and self-determination. I have a nice little studio apartment on the back side of Beacon Hill in Boston, with enough income to get along on modestly but comfortably. I am a compulsive writer. When I was a senior at Salem State College in 1997 I read Virginia Wolfe's "A Room of One's Own", and that pretty much told the tale for me. Today I have that "money and a room of one's own" that Wolfe stated was necessary if a woman wanted to write. Add one cat to the mix, and I am well content to live (almost) alone. I would love to travel, but would like to take my time in the process. Given the opportunity and the cash I would like to take a ship to Europe, then travel around by rail all over the place. I would also like to travel the USA by rail, bus, what have you, all over land. I have a flying phobia, and anyway, from what I hear about air travel these days it sounds very uncomfortable and more than a little aggravating. In the meantime, I have an LJ friend who works on ships and travels all over the world and makes these wonderful posts with photos and everything. This old neighborhood of mine retains something of its old bohemian flavor, and as such it is my location of choice. I am two blocks away from Suffolk University, where, because of my status as a Senior Citizen, I am allowed to take courses for free - all I have to do is buy my books. I am studying ancient history, and literature, as well as trying to learn to speak German (the language of my great-grandparents). I cannot think of anyplace else I would rather live. I am content with my life, and grateful for what I have; I do not spend much time wishing for what I do not have. Such dark thoughts could make me old before my time. If I have learned nothing else in my 67 years, I have learned that "NOTHING is THAT important!" I am a committed Christian, but a liberal one rather than a so-called "compassionate conservative" (that's an oxymoron, isnt it?) Politically I am a registered Independent, but I lean toward the Democratic Party as a rule, with a few exceptions. As they say in a program I have belonged to for the last 38 years, I "...do not regret the past, nor wish to close the door upon it." | |
